Meet your teacher 💫

Hi! I'm Deb Karpman, Founder of Paper Kaleidoscope

When I started sharing YouTube drawing videos for fun in 2024, it was a huge surprise to me that thousands of people across the world were tuning in to watch. I was never someone who was online that much, and I'm sure you've noticed that social media isn't exactly native to me; however I am absolutely honored that you have chosen to be part of my drawing and art community.

You'll find on this site a number of ways to learn. First, there are a bunch of free resources that are great if you're just starting out and wondering how to get good effects with materials such as pen and ink. Second, I offer a number of courses and ways to learn if you're looking for an in depth way to learn how to draw. The difference between my social media and the courses is that the videos go slowly and methodically through each topic, and of course are distraction free compared to social media. I also provide all students feedback on their work via email, the platform, or discord, whichever place you are most comfortable sharing your work. In my view, this is the best way to learn because as an instructor I can point out specific things you might not see in your own work.

If you're an art teacher who landed on this site and you're looking for art education curriculum resources, I've taken all of my best time-tested lessons and created a number of ways to make your lives easier, since I know how crazy busy the art teacher life is! If you need art education PD (specifically designed for art teachers and not a huge corporate site), check out my PD platform, and I also have loads of art curriculum whether you're just starting out or looking to freshen up your curriculum.

A little about my background and how I ended up doing this! I started my career as an Art Professor after getting my MFA from UMass. As an Art Professor, I directed the foundations program and taught upper level courses in drawing and mixed media. From there, I moved to California and have had roles in higher education administration at the University of Southern California and UC San Diego. I have shown my own work in gallery exhibitions across the country at 49 different venues, and I'm currently working on my first illustrated book (my art can be found at www.debkarpman.com).

Thank you again for joining my community and look forward to helping you achieve your goals for your own art and drawing practice!
